“Asocial Red Squirrels Will Adopt Orphan Related Pups” – AS 20 Years Of Research Carried Out 2001 Showed – “This Intelligent Behaviour.”
Female Red Squirrels ARE Moving Orphan Related Pups –
They live in compete isolation; the only time they will allow another red squirrel on their territory is the one day a year when the females are ready to mate or when they are nursing their pups. - Main Photo.
‘Grey’ Squirrels ARE The Enemy Within – Ian Morton says it’s not racist to prefer red squirrels to greys. They strip tree bark and nibble shoots, they bury nuts in plant pots and lawns and retrieve them destructively they dig up bulbs and take one bite before abandoning them on the surface, they steal food from bird-tables – 2001 February 3rd -

Bigger and stronger than the reds the greys have competed all too successfully for ideal broad-leaved woodland habitat. Worse 70 per cent of greys carry the parapox virus (they are immune to) which causes a pustular dermatitis that kills reds within four or five days contact.

Craig Shuttleworth has spent the past three years warring against grey squirrels on behalf of beleaguered reds as the project officer of the Menter Mon conservation campaign on Anglesey.
Considering The Catalogue Of The Greys Iniquities, This IS Hardly The ‘Racist’ Xenophobia – That Animal Activists This Week Tried To Suggest.
Greys were only introduced to Britain from North America in the 19th century, but the last population estimate by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee ((JNCC) –
Put the number of adult greys in Britain in 1995 at above 2.5 Million.
2001: The number of red squirrels was tentatively at no more than 161,000.
An unpublished JNCC statistic noted 14 greys per hectare in one leafy London suburb reflecting a protected environment with few predators, adaptability, a catholic palate and a plenitude of natural foods supplemented by human carelessness and deliberate contribution.
And no matter how tasty the alternatives, greys still ravage amateur and professional plantings. What can be done to discourage them?
Shuttleworth Has No Time For Sentimentality. He Advocates Trapping Them And Hitting Them Over The Head. He is, of cause, aware of possible alternatives. An oral contraceptive under developments by Sheffield University, with Forestry Commission funding, may defend timber crops against greys but this is an expensive solution and local application only.
Driving greys away with ultrasound can be only a short-term solution and fish-oil repellent sprays, effective against deer, rabbits and badgers, do not deter grey squirrels. Poisoning works, but it is a slow and painful death and other animals, including pets, are vulnerable, and an introduced myxomatosis equivalent would cause an outcry.
Menter Mon does not even shoot greys- according to Shuttleworth; they are tough enough to survive a dose of shotgun pellets.’ We decided the best way is to trap, using a mink trap baiter with a cob of maize,’ he says. ‘It’s cheap.’
‘Red Squirrels Will Adopt’ – ‘Orphaned Related pups.’
You can shoot the grey in the trap with an air rifle, but the best way is to run it into a hessian sack and kill it with a sharp blow to the head through the sacking, using a heavy stick made of yew or oak. On welfare grounds, we do not recommend drowning.
‘The RSPCA said it was a difficult issue but if pressed, it would prefer the trap the sack and the blow to the head, providing you know what your doing. This is a job for professionals.
‘It is illegal to trap a grey and release it elsewhere.’
‘We have killed 3,500 greys over the past three years without adverse media comment because people know we’re doing it to help the local economy by re-establishing the reds.’
Shuttleworth cites the National Trust centre at Formby, in Lancashire, as an economical model.
‘Up to 500,000 people a year go there to see reds and four tons of peanuts are sold to visitors to feed the squirrels and help fund the centre.’
