Ever since their five baby Blackbirds were killed by just one ‘magpie’ the Blackbird parents visit on and off their destroyed nest still searching for their lost chicks knowing exactly how many to search for. They never seem to give up – 30th April 2010.
Photos: Blue tit. Very cheerful song and calls. Uses nest boxes. Numbers seriously down! – View below.
The ‘bird-brained’ twit’ who made up the term had a lot to learn about our now mostly lost songbirds. Blackbirds ARE – VERY SMART AND REALLY BRAINY AS ‘I’ HAVE FOUND OUT AND GOT TO KNOW. One or other will always know when I’am coming out of the back door, or if I have the plastic food bag will wait anxiously making low calling noises to me as to their own young.
Female Blackbirds are brown and do ‘sing’ but very quietly the male Blackbird is jet black with a bright yellow beak and eye-ring. Singing like an angel to all who may care to notice him. I may not have seen or heard them all day but they magically appear whenever I’m shovelling over the compost or just appear whenever I’m tidying up or digging around the plants.
Quitely waiting for any worms slugs insects spiders to appear especially when they have young to feed.
Keep covers over any drains as slugs hide underneath, I then chop these up for my blackbird’s food tray; this also helps the plants. Their food is best cut up very small with scissors; they don’t have teeth.
“Blackbirds do scrape food against the ground to break it up but this expends their time to feed themselves or their chicks and valuable energy.”
One of many attractive British songbirds were losing. Beautiful yellow blue white feathers.
Regular user of nest boxes check out design to make some. In return you’d get a great all year round garden songster to listen to. And, eating all your garden creepy crawlie pests.
Harmonious happy Blue Tits with short undulating flight.
Nest 12 days to make inside trees pipes wall holes in ground.
‘Our’ stylish splendidly serene confident cheerful songster. One of Britain’s favourites.
“But appallingly now being ‘Killed off Silenced’ especially by rural and urban predation!”

2010 BTO – Warning: Decline of the Blue Tit.
Would astonish many songbird lovers. Shocking study shows many songbirds are vanishing from Britains bird tables & feeders at an alarming rate!
Modern feeders changes in bird feeding are threatening species.
‘Four times as many Great Spotted Woodpeckers now use gardens feeders than at start of this survey.’
Great Spotted & all Woodpeckers raid birds nests – And ‘eat’ – Adult and chick Songbirds!
Cont: For Blackbird babies they feed only small worms grubs bugs spiders slugs, insects beetles, etc all ‘our’ unwanted garden pests. Though these all seem to be in ever shorter supply as you’ll notice car windscreens are ever cleaner now.
Wanda or Wuffy will call out looking running towards me asking for food if their worms insects are in short supply and they have babies chicks to feed.
Showing their anxiety by being brave coming up quite close trying to get food for them. To show I’m not a threat I always turn away or to one side.
They’re very forgiving, like when I’m noisily sweeping about and don’t see and startle them, or rushing into their food shed they just fly to one side without alarm.
Just like they’ve got used to my odd human ways.
The trouble IS slug pellets. Most garden and household sprays which are poison. Most people don’t want to pay the bit extra for non toxic sprays. Remember WE also breathe this in, consume in our food. Animals and our own bodies are full up with a myriad of poisons metals as blood tests confirm.
One pair of Blue tits alone take and need 15,000 insect pests a season. No amount of our toxic spraying could compete with that serious – ‘pest control.’
But, the songbirds then eat the sprayed, pelleted ‘poisoned’ slugs, snails, etc, that bothered us so. They eat and give to their chicks this will then kill them all. Poison sprays, pellets – Yet another reason for a fall in the number of songbirds, sparrows from all our gardens parks. Everywhere!
“We took the ‘dawn chorus’ for granted from thrushes blackbirds robins plus all the so many other beautiful songbird life.”
We (all) used to have songbirds everywhere but they are now at their lowest levels for 40+ years!
I care so should you and everyone should. For our own humankind’s ‘future.’
In my backyard we manage in quite a small space what with the leaning over yucca pot plants raised beds along with many rescued unknown plants dumped by the ‘big black bins.’ The upturned dustbin lid for their rainwater (contains B12) to drink have their daily baths.
This soft water cleans their feathers better.
Rainwater I’ve found I also need less soap for general washing so I’ve got about eight buckets dotted about with slated lids in case a bird fell in which can happen.
The food I try to supply is meaty which I haven’t bought in years but a cafe I use serves large portions. They supply left over bacon sausage chicken etc; cut up tiny.
Blackbirds though want live slugs bugs worms never eating too much of these foods. Ever Clever Wildlife or Songbirds.
We are in dire need of songbirds they eat billions of our bugs slugs insects and all OUR garden pests.
Were obligated to HELP and ‘SAVE’ them in this OUR – Senseless ‘folly.’ WE have made for them – Just like the bees. Think care – do something?
Garden Songbirds Die from eating – Our ‘Poisoned’ slugs bugs insect pests – That bothered us so!
Over the years I’ve always carried my ‘bird bag’ to collect food thrown away, left about and onto pavements. It goes to a good cause cut up for my two songbirds and the only two left in the whole area! It stops feeding the mice, rats. One mouse in three months can produce 60 offspring!
Why cannot we ALL think of wildlife’s needs for once? Even bugs do so much for us but, were all so distanced from earth’s reality with our consumer driven life of a disposable materialistic and some could add thoughtless existence at times.
2010 - “To days achievement should be fighting against songbird’s thoughtless future extinction.
Which is the way mostly all numbers of our lost songbirds are going.”
“Every adult, child’s responsibility is improving and preserving our planets eco system which were all using up far too fast for a better tomorrow. And not leaving it bereft. Human beings in collision with nature by having far less contact with the natural world than our ancestors.”
Far too many adults today don’t even know what a ‘songbird’ is let alone children!
Are songbirds sparrows not ‘sexy’ enough in todays world for most people to want to care or even know about?
